The Morgan Conservatory Paper Mill

Within the Conservatory's walls will be a professional Paper Mill dedicated to preserving the practice of archival hand papermaking similar to that of the University of Iowa's Center for the Book Paper Research Facility headed by Timothy Barrett. The Mill will produce Japanese mending tissue, a wide array of thicker European Case papers, decorated papers and text-weight book papers.

The Art Lab

The Conservatory will serve as an outreach to professionals as well as students for research and creative artistic endeavors in the field of papermaking. Workshops in the art and technique of papermaking will be conducted in the Art Lab. These workshops will vary in terms of skill level, intensity and duration and professional artists will be invited to participate as well as students eager for more intensive learning.

The Bookarts Program

The Bookarts Program will be designed around preserving the traditional art of bookmaking, as well as exploring and encouraging innovative and non-traditional forms both in structure and conceptual ideas of the book as an art object. Classes and workshops will be offered in bookbinding, letterpress printing and related fields to foster these traditional methods and craft of bookarts.

The Teaching Museum/Exhibition Gallery

The museum will feature artwork not only made in the archival Paper Mill, but within the Art Lab and Bookarts programs. The gallery will showcase several juried and invitational shows each year and will display work created through the Conservatory's programs.

The Assistantship Program

The Conservatory will offer two rotating 24 month Assistantships to qualified individuals. Highly talented students and aspiring artists throughout the nation who have demonstrated a strong interest in and commitment to traditional Eastern and Western papermaking will be recruited and provided with the opportunity to train and develop their skills in this papermaking certificate program.
